One of the main activities of the NZMS is the provision of financial support to students in mathematics in New Zealand. Towards this aim, the Society invites applications for Student Travel Awards from students to support them presenting their research at conferences, attending workshops, and developing new collaborations. Preference may be given to students enrolled for postgraduate degrees.
NZMS Student Travel Awards are not intended to cover the full costs of attending a conference or workshop. Rather they are intended as a contribution towards these costs and to give students experience in applying for external funding.
Awards will normally be for amounts in the range $500 to $1500. Typical Awards for travel within NZ and Australia are in the range $200 to $600, with larger Awards considered for travel further overseas.
Eligibility
The NZMS Student Travel Awards will be awarded to students enrolled for a degree in mathematical sciences at a New Zealand University who can demonstrate that they are involved in the NZ Mathematics community. Students must be enrolled at the time of the proposed travel.
Students may apply for a NZMS Travel Award more than once during their enrolment for a postgraduate degree.
When to apply
Retrospective applications will not be considered and applications must be made well in advance. The funded travel must be at least one month after the application deadline, but applications further in advance are preferred.
All funded travel must be completed within nine months of notification of the award or funding must be returned.
The quarterly deadlines for 2022 Student Travel Grant applications are: 15 February, 15 May, 15 August, and 15 November. You will hear back from the Council within a month of the deadline.
How to apply
Applications for Student Travel Awards can be made to the NZMS Council by sending the Student Travel Award application form and required supporting documentation as a single pdf file to the NZMS Secretary.
Guidelines for preparing supporting material can be found on page 3 of the application form.

Additional notes
As of 2017 the NZMS Student Travel Awards are supported by a grant of $5000 per annum from the Margaret and John Kalman Charitable Trust. This support will be reviewed every three years by the Trustees, at which time a decision will be made either to continue, or discontinue, support of the Awards.
As the NZMS is GST registered it is preferable for payment of grants to be made through an applicant’s department so that the GST can be recovered. This may increase the value of the grant, as $200 grant would cover $230 of costs, if they include GST.

Meetings that we might expect (and encourage) many NZ students to attend, such as the MISG, may have a common policy in place for all students. Please check for any correspondence or notices in the NZMS newsletter to this effect, or contact the NZMS Secretary.
Some meetings held in New Zealand, including the NZMS Mathematics Colloquium, the Maths-in-Industry NZ workshop (MiNZ), and the New Zealand Mathematics and Statistics Postgraduate Conference (NZMASP), often receive funding directly from the NZMS, and thus may not be eligible for NZMS Student Travel Grants. Please email the NZMS Secretary to check this before preparing a grant application for such an event.
