2024 NZMS Joint Meeting Subsidy Scheme

The NZMS has set aside funding to assist its members to attend the Joint Meeting of the NZMS, AustMS and AMS. This funding is intended to cover the gap between the usual costs of attending the NZMS Colloquium and this year’s special meeting. It is available to NZMS members, outside of Auckland who do not have access to large grants. Funding is provisional on the applicant submitting a talk to one of the special sessions or to the contributed papers session. Indicative funding levels are, NZD600 non-student and NZD300 student but actual levels of subsidy will be confirmed after all applications are processed.

Applications are due on the 2nd of August 2024. To apply submit a CV and a statement regarding your access to other funding to the Secretary of the NZMS, Assoc Prof Geertrui Van de Voorde.

NZMS Student Travel Awards

One of the main activities of the NZMS is the provision of financial support to students in mathematics in New Zealand. Towards this aim, the Society invites applications for Student Travel Awards from students to support them presenting their research at conferences, attending workshops, and developing new collaborations. Preference may be given to students enrolled for postgraduate degrees.

NZMS Student Travel Awards are not intended to cover the full costs of attending a conference or workshop. Rather they are intended as a contribution towards these costs and to give students experience in applying for external funding.

Awards will normally be for amounts in the range $500 to $1500.

Eligibility

The NZMS Student Travel Awards will be awarded to students enrolled for a degree in mathematical sciences at a New Zealand University who can demonstrate that they are involved in the NZ Mathematics community. Students must be enrolled at the time of the proposed travel.

Students may apply for a NZMS Travel Award more than once during their enrolment for a postgraduate degree.

When to apply

Retrospective applications will not be considered and applications must be made well in advance. The funded travel must be at least one month after the application deadline, but applications further in advance are preferred.

All funded travel must be completed within nine months of notification of the award or funding must be returned.

The quarterly deadlines for 2024 Student Travel Grant applications are: 15 February, 15 June, 15 August, and 15 November. You will hear back from the Council within a month of the deadline.

How to apply

Applications for Student Travel Awards can be made to the NZMS Council by sending the Student Travel Award application form and required supporting documentation as a single pdf file to the NZMS Secretary: Assoc Prof Geertrui Van de Voorde.

Guidelines for preparing supporting material can be found on page 3 of the application form.

Recent Student Travel Grants

Year Total amount awarded Number of grants
2023 $9075.3 8
2022 $12500 9
2019 $9271 8
2018 $9012 11
2017 $8090 10
2016 $8000 12
2015 $3400 5
2014 $9134 15

Additional notes

  • As of 2017 the NZMS Student Travel Awards are supported by a grant of $5000 per annum from the Margaret and John Kalman Charitable Trust. This support will be reviewed every three years by the Trustees, at which time a decision will be made either to continue, or discontinue, support of the Awards.
  • As the NZMS is GST registered it is preferable for payment of grants to be made through an applicant's department so that the GST can be recovered. This may increase the value of the grant, as $200 grant would cover $230 of costs, if they include GST.
  • Meetings that we might expect (and encourage) many NZ students to attend, such as the MISG, may have a common policy in place for all students. Please check for any correspondence or notices in the NZMS newsletter to this effect, or contact the NZMS Secretary.
  • Some meetings held in New Zealand, including the NZMS Mathematics Colloquium, the Maths-in-Industry NZ workshop (MiNZ), and the New Zealand Mathematics and Statistics Postgraduate Conference (NZMASP), often receive funding directly from the NZMS, and thus may not be eligible for NZMS Student Travel Grants. Please email the NZMS Secretary to check this before preparing a grant application for such an event.

NZMS Financial Assistance

The NZ Mathematical Society Council invites applications for financial assistance with the costs of mathematical research-related activity. Any research-related activity that furthers the objects of the Society will be considered. For example: hosting mathematical visitors; organising conferences, workshops, or outreach activities; and conference attendance, including costs associated with family responsibilities.

Financial assistance is separated into the categories:

  • Research Grant (e.g. conference attendance or other research-related travel, including costs associated with family responsibilities)
  • Conference/Workshop/Outreach activity organisation
  • Grant from the South Pacific Fund

A relatively high priority will be given to applications involving contact between the mathematical communities of New Zealand and the islands of the South Pacific.

Eligibility

Research Grant: Non-student members of the NZ Mathematical Society.

Conference/Workshop Organisation: Organisers of NZ-based mathematical conferences, workshops, outreach activities.

South Pacific Fund: Researchers from the University of the South Pacific.

How to apply

Applications to the NZMS Council should be made using the Financial assistance application form. Completed application forms and supporting documentation should be sent as a single pdf file to the NZMS Secretary: Assoc Prof Geertrui Van de Voorde.

When to apply

Retrospective applications will not be considered. The funded activity must be at least one month after the application deadline, but applications further in advance are preferred.

The quarterly deadlines for 2024 Financial Assistance applications are: 15 February, 15 June, 15 August, and 15 November. You will hear back from the Council within a month of the deadline.
